5 Steps to Finding Your Personal Style

We all know that girl who has that ONE style. You see something hanging in a display window and think, "oh my gosh that's totally Barb (or whatever her name is)!" Sometimes you might think, "why can't I be more like Barb? What looks most like me?" But honestly, personal style can be a hard thing to put your finger on!

Maybe it's just the Gemini in me but my style used to change DAILY. Boho, edgy, classic, preppy. You name it. There are so many great styles and looks out there and I'm sure you can appreciate a lot of them. But at the end of the day, your personal style is all about which style truly speaks to you!

So which one does? Let's find out!!

 1. Have a Date With Your Closet

Take a look at your current wardrobe. Point out the pieces that are your absolute favorite. Typically, these are going to be the pieces that speak the most to your style. Are they girly? Floral? Black? Edgy? This can help you get a handle on the types of items that truly speak to you.

Now that you've picked your favorites, do you see a few (or a lot!) of the same distressed white denim jacket band tee combat bootsthings? Have a pile of ankle booties? A plethora of striped tops or band tees? You're probably gravitating toward these items time and time again because they make you feel happy and comfortable! IF these items flatter you and work for your current style then great! This is your signature staple.

Example: My signature staples are band tees, ripped up jeans, combat boots, and the color black!

2. Confront Your Mistakes

What has been hanging in your closet for ages that you've never worn? What's making you cringe like that old relationship you're trying to forget? Pull out these items and ask yourself why you don't like it. Does it have too many ruffles? Maybe it's too girly for you. Does it make you feel too young? Or too old? Does the color not flatter you? It is important to know those types of things that just aren't you. These items definitely aren't part of your signature style!

Example: I'm cringing over anything floral or with ruffles. These items make me feel too young and girly. (Disclaimer: you may love floral patterns and ruffles and that's awesome! These items may make you feel feminine and beautiful! It's just important to figure out what works for YOU).

3. Find Your Style Spirit Animal(s)

The likelihood of finding just one fashion icon that embodies everything you want signature style black corduroy overall dress
your style to be is slim to none. No one has had all the same experiences as you! Your signature style should be something that's unique to YOU. Most people are a mix of several fashion icons- a little Rihanna with a dash of Kim K or maybe Lady Gaga. Head to your Pinterest account, search "style icon" or different names of style icons and start pinning! Pin stuff that you not only love but that you could actually see yourself wearing. Over time, you may start to see a pattern of people that you can look for for inspiration.

4. Photo Opp

You know those days when you leave the house just feeling awesome?! Start snapping a photo of your outfits on these days! There's something about each of these outfits that's just working for you! We feel the most powerful and bad ass when we feel we look great and what we're wearing is a true reflection of us.

5. Put a Label On It

Now here we are, the final step! Time to put a label on it! Look back through all of your inspiration photos of your style icons, the photos of you in those outfits that made you feel awesome, and your favorite items in your closet. Pick a few words to describe the vibe of the looks. Classic, bohemian, modern, vintage, retro, grungy, edgy, tough, glam, trendy. Settle on a handful of words that feel the most true about your style.

Ultimately, trust your instincts! Wear what makes you feel like the best version of yourself. If you have more classic style, wearing the season's most out-there trend pieces is going to look unnatural. If you have a trendy and edgy style, you may feel smothered in classic and simple pieces. You’ve got a good thing goin' girl!! Now that you know more about your style and what vibes with you--embrace it, refine it, and OWN IT!

XOXO,

Alyx
